What is Pilates?
The Pilates method of body conditioning is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed over 90 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates. Originally called "contrology" by its founder the Pilates discipline strengthens and tones muscles, improves posture, provides flexibility and balance, unites body and mind, and creates a more streamlined shape.
Why the "sudden" popularity of Pilates?
At a time when fitness is searching to create new and innovative programs, Pilates based exercises have come to the forefront as a formula for success. Pilates based matwork principles teach us that the body is the finest and only tool necessary for achieving physical fitness. Currently most exercise regimes are based on isolating muscles and exercising each area of the body individually rather than treating the body as the integrated whole that it is. Pilates based exercises are focused on giving our bodies muscular and flexibility balance, improved circulation, reduced stress and improved endurance. The Pilates philosophy focuses on training the body and mind to work together towards the goal of overall fitness. The power each of us holds to take control over our own well being is startling. Being able to connect the mind to the physical self gives us the ability to blend the power of our minds with the movement of our bodies in a way that is both extremely efficient and enjoyable.
