Why should every woman no matter her age incorporate resistance (weight)
training in her program?
Research has shown that beginning as early as her mid-thirties, women lose
approximately 1/3 pound of muscle every year which is subsequently replaced
with fat. In the ten year period between the ages 40-50, the typical woman will
lose 3-5 pounds of muscle and gain 13-15 pounds of fat. The key role that
strength training can play in reversing this undesirable development can't be
underestimated.
Resistance exercise can help restore muscle to a woman's body
thereby:
- reducing body fat, increase her metabolism (burn more calories even at
rest!),
- increase energy levels
- increase bone density, decreasing the risks associated with
osteoporosis,
- improve sleep patterns
- for many, bolster self confidence and self esteem
Dr. Miriam Nelson Ph.D., the director of the centre for physical fitness at
Tufts University in Boston states,
"Women who get involved in strength training are amazed at the
results, resistance exercise is important for everyone as they get older but is
especially important for women as we start out smaller than men and have less
muscle and more fat. We face a greater risk of developing osteoporosis and have
less muscle and more fat. We face a greater risk of developing osteoporosis
after menopause when we lose the natural protection of estrogen. We also on an
average live longer than men do. For all of these reasons, women all women need
some form of strength training."
