Why should every woman no matter her age incorporate resistance (weight)training in her program?
Research has shown that beginning as early as her mid-thirties, women loseapproximately 1/3 pound of muscle every year which is subsequently replacedwith fat. In the ten year period between the ages 40-50, the typical woman willlose 3-5 pounds of muscle and gain 13-15 pounds of fat. The key role thatstrength training can play in reversing this undesirable development can not be underestimated.
Resistance exercise can help restore muscle to a woman's body thereby:
- reducing body fat and increasing her metabolism (burn more calories even at rest!)
- increasing energy levels
- increasing bone density, decreasing the risks associated with osteoporosis
- improving sleep patterns
- for many, bolstering self confidence and self esteem
Dr. Miriam Nelson Ph.D., the director of the centre for physical fitness atTufts University in Boston states,
"Women who get involved in strength training are amazed at the results, resistance exercise is important for everyone as they get older but is especially important for women as we start out smaller than men and have less muscle and more fat. We face a greater risk of developing osteoporosis and have less muscle and more fat. We face a greater risk of developing osteoporosis after menopause when we lose the natural protection of estrogen. We also on average live longer than men do. For all of these reasons, all women need some form of strength training."
